He began his career as a Lecturer with Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) at Bintulu Campus in 1988, and thereafter continued to serve UPM, Serdang with the Department of Forest Production, and later with the Department of Forestry Science and Biodiversity (under the Faculty of Forestry and Environment). He was appointed as Associate Professor in 2006 before retiring in August 2022. Throughout his career, Dr Zaki was known for his expertise on Forest Resource Management and Silviculture.
Dr Mohd Zaki was seconded to Terengganu State Government (Terengganu Strategic and Integrity Institute (TSIS) as the Deputy CEO cum the Director of the Centre of Excellence Pelan Induk Terengganu Sejahtera (CoE PITAS), for two (2) years beginning June 15, 2020.
He joined GPB as a Director on 1 August 2018 before being redesignated as an Executive Director in September 2021. Then he assumes the position of Chief Executive Officer from 1 February 2022 until 12 March 2024.
